I get asked quite frequently how to open Word 2007 documents in Word 2003. The problem is Word, Excel and Powerpoint 2007 and 2010 come with new file extensions that aren't compatible with earlier releases. If you don't "save as" previous version, then you are stuck with a compatibility problem. All is not lost though, there are a number of ways you can get round this.

If it’s just one or two documents to convert then it’s easier to use a website called ZamZar.com

Just follow the instructions:

Step one: Specify where the file is on your hard drive you wish to convert.

Step two: State which version of word you wish to convert too (in your case .doc for Word 2003 or .xls for Excel 2003)

Step three:  Enter your email address.

Press four: They will email you back the converted document.

If you are doing this on a more regularly basis, or have more than 2 documents, it will be easy to install the Office compatibility pack for Word, Excel and PP.

Just click on “download” and follow on screen instructions.

This may take some time.

After It’s installed, when you open a Word 2007 document using Word 2003, it will ask if you wish to convert and will do so by creating a new version of the document but in 2003 (.doc) format.

In both of the above examples, you’ll have two versions of the same document so make sure you keep track of which one is current.  You may loose some formatting if the feature isn’t in 2003.
