PC Gaming

I've been playing video games since high school. My first home computer was the now "retro" Commodore64. Hours of super 8-bit colour gaming and tape loading madness. But it wasn't just the launch of my interest in gaming that would carry into my adulthood, it also provided me with a platform to base my carer in. I've been a programmer ever since. So when PCs became more affordable and I had a little more time and money, it was only inevitable that my interest for gaming should rekindle. For me, gaming, when used wisely, is an experience like no other form of media. Video games can take you to place that's away from normal every day life to somewhere completely fictional and interactive. Unlike film or the mindless soaps on the TV, games provide a fictional "two way" interactive experience, putting you in control.

Friends do ask me why PC Gaming? The answer is simple. I'm interested in both the games and the hardware. I like to have the freedom of what I play and what I play it on. I want to be more involved and understand "what goes on” inside the box.

A gaming PC presents its own challenges and rewards over "out-of-the-box" gaming platforms. It's a satisfying feeling when you start playing the latest games on a machine which you have not only assembled, but have taken the time and effort to choose its components. It is this that I find most rewarding.

Although not the cheapest gaming platform, the gaming PC sets the standard for the ultimate video gaming experience and is constantly pushing the boundaries of technology. For this reason; a gaming PC needs to be at the forefront of cutting edge technology. Component manufacturers are constantly reviewing and updating their products making them faster and more competitive. A nightmare for all PC enthusiasts as upgrading becomes an expensive necessity. The good thing about building your own PC for gaming is that you can spend as much or as little as you want to obtain a decent PC. Careful research often reaps rewards at a snip of the cost.

PC gaming isn't for everyone. Consoles are fine of you're not too bothered about anything else other than the games but for me, the gaming is only part of it. The building and upgrading of a gaming PC is time consuming, frustrating and extremely expensive. But once the house has been re-mortgaged and your head is out of the case, it's good to put the screw driver down and get down to some serious gaming. The big question is PC gaming to be replaced by cheaper “off the shelf” consoles? Who knows? It’s more than likely, but for now it's mouse and keyboard for the win!

Playing L4D2 and Bioshock 2 MP.

My son and I have been sharing the honours in both games this month, taking turns in the hot seat. Personally, I've been quite enjoying the the new Scavenge mode in L4D2 which brings something new to the new release and the additional specials aren't bad either. However, after a few weeks we quickly got bored with the whole thing. The experience this time round not as impacting at the first time round.

Bioshock 2 MP on the other hand is a little harder to get into. Starting with nothing more than a pistol and an electro plasmid, you get your arse whopped within the early hours in any game mode and this can be quite frustrating and would, I can see, turn people away. The servers aren't that busy with players but here are regulars which is comforting. Climb in to the post 10 rankings and things start to get easier with more weapons and plasmids at your disposal. It's actually great fun. I've just reached level 18.

I'm still on the prowel for a single player game but I may just have to wait a little longer.

I've just realised I have no single player game to play at the moment and I don't really know what to play next. This is a first.. I've just played an hour or so of BioShock2 online after completing the single player campaign. What a load of shit. I may just play some MW2 online for a while until I've decided or I may look at these:

Just Cause 2
Assassins Creed 2
Left4Dead 2

With such a lacklustre of choice, it makes you wonder that these £300+ graphics cards people buy is actually worth the cash. Is this a sign of things to come for PC gaming?

An evening’s orgy of PC gaming saw my progression of Bioshock2 to its conclusion. Finishing off the Fontaine Futuristics campaign from my last visit through to the final level in Persephone.

In Fontaine Futuristics, I’ve come across a gem of a Plasmid, the ability to befriend Big Daddys, Alpha Series and Brutes. This is great fine. I just manage to befriend a Big Daddy just before the arrival of Big Sister. Just sit back and watch them make mince meat of each other. Very entertaining.

Persephone is the home of Sofia Lamb and after fighting two Big Sisters, subject Delta reaches the quarantine room where Eleanor Lamb is being held. However, she suffocates Eleanor breaking her natural bond with Delta. She must be restored as a big sister to help escape. You see the world in the eyes of a little sisters before the days of raptures demise and a glorious touch that lifted the game from its dark damp corridors into sparkling halls filled with glitzy residents.

Unlike the original Bioshock failed ending, Bioshock 2 has no boss. Escape is the only objective and the final quest polishes off a truly amazing game.

If there was ever a tonic required for follow up, this was surely it.

This week I ploughed through the Ryan Amusements level and half way though Paupers drop. So quite a lot of goings on during this stage of the game. I’ve encountered my first Big daddy and Big Sister. Adopted a few little sisters and gathered Adam from a couple of corpses. On choosing whether to harvest the little sisters or save her after they have done my dirty work came quite easy. I remember from the first game deciding which has a desired affect on the outcome of the game. Since I harvested nearly all the little sisters in the first game, this time around I’m going to save them whilst maintaining my natural good karma.

I’m still however, battling my way around the key board mappings. I’ve just meet another Big Daddy and I’m unintentionally hitting all the wrong buttons. Zip instead of Zap ain’t getting me far.

I’ve left the game tonight in Skid Row, with a corpse waiting my gathering
